Mt. Rainier Sunset Elopement
Elisabeth and Andrew’s Mt. Rainier Elopement was in my eyes- a DREAM. They flew in for a secret mountain elopement and really got to enjoy a weekend of just them and the Pacific Northwest. We started at their AIRBNB where they got dressed and ready for our planned hike and their sunset ceremony. This elopement was planned by Erika from The Greatest Adventure Weddings who does an absolutely amazing job bringing together adventure with intentionality and detail. She also did a beautiful job officiating their ceremony. They had a sweet ceremony then shared donuts, champagne and a first dance with Mt. Rainier in the background. It was truly perfect!
How to Plan a Magical Mt. Rainier Elopement: Tips from a Mt. Rainier Elopement Photographer
If you’re envisioning a breathtaking elopement with alpine meadows, wildflower trails, and snow-capped peaks as your backdrop, a Mt. Rainier elopement might just be your perfect match. As a Mt. Rainier elopement photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing love stories tucked into the most magical corners of Mt. Rainier National Park, and let me tell you—it’s every bit as enchanting as it looks.
Whether you're planning an adventurous hiking elopement or a cozy ceremony near a scenic overlook, this guide will walk you through how to plan the ultimate Mt. Rainier elopement, including when to go, where to stay, what to pack, and how to make the most of your day.
Why Choose Mt. Rainier for Your Elopement?
Mt. Rainier National Park offers some of the most awe-inspiring views in the Pacific Northwest. With dramatic mountain backdrops, lush forests, and alpine lakes, it's a photographer’s dream and a couple’s fairytale. There’s a peaceful stillness to the park—especially during sunrise and sunset—that adds a layer of intimacy and magic to your day.
As your Mt. Rainier elopement photographer, I’ll help you find the best ceremony spots, hidden gems for portraits, and timelines that align with golden light (and fewer crowds!).
Best Time of Year to Elope at Mt. Rainier
The best months for a Mt. Rainier elopement are typically July through early October. This is when trails are clear of snow, wildflowers are in bloom, and visibility is at its best. Paradise, Sunrise, and Tipsoo Lake are particularly stunning during the late summer months.
Wildflower Season: Mid-to-late July
Best Weather: August through September
Fall Colors: Late September to early October
Winter elopements are possible, but they require more planning and snow-specific gear. If you're interested in a snowy Mt. Rainier elopement, I can help guide you on how to safely plan for one.
Booking an Airbnb for Your Elopement Day
One of the most underrated (and important!) parts of planning a Mt. Rainier elopement is choosing the right Airbnb or cabin for your stay. This is where you’ll get ready, share intimate moments, and possibly even celebrate afterward with a small dinner or cake cutting.
Look for Airbnbs near Ashford, Packwood, or Enumclaw depending on which park entrance you're using (Nisqually, Stevens Canyon, or White River). Look for:
Large windows with natural light for getting ready photos
Cozy spaces that photograph well
Decks or porches with a view of the forest or mountains
Bonus tip: Choose a rental that allows events or photography so we can take some pre- or post-elopement portraits there!
What to Pack for a Hiking Elopement in Mt. Rainier
If you're planning to hike for your ceremony or photos, a little prep goes a long way. Here's what I recommend packing for your hiking elopement in Mt. Rainier National Park:
Your wedding attire (wear it or pack it to change at the summit)
Hiking boots (you can swap them for nicer shoes later)
Layered clothing (weather can shift quickly in the mountains)
Water and snacks
Headlamps or flashlights for sunrise/sunset hikes
Your marriage license
Bouquet in a water jar
A backpack to carry it all (I recommend a sleek hiking pack that fits your vibe)
Don't worry—I’ll help carry what I can too! I've even stashed veils and vow books in my camera bag before.
Permits + Legal Info for Your Mt. Rainier Elopement
To elope in Mt. Rainier National Park, you’ll need a special use permit. This helps protect the park and ensures your elopement is safe, private, and legal.
Here’s what you’ll need:
A Special Use Permit (application fee is around $60)
Your Washington State Marriage License
A designated ceremony spot approved by the park (don’t worry, I can help you choose one!)
You’ll also need to pay the standard entrance fee to get into the park, unless you have an annual pass.
