PNW Forest Engagement Session
Today I wanted to share some of Hannah and Erik’s session to talk more about winter engagement sessions. We did their session in January in the PNW and what I love about their session is that it can stand the test of time across the different seasons. While we didn’t get sun on their day (which is pretty normal for PNW winters) we had nice even light and the temperatures were mild. We opted for a forest session and the trees in this area look like this year round. PNW forests are a great option during the winter months because they usually are snow free and beautiful!
Winter Engagement Sessions in the PNW
If you are looking to do an engagement session in the winter in the Pacific Northwest, there are a few things to consider. First, the weather up here- while mild compared to other parts of the world- does limit certain locations. I often receive inquiries asking for Mt. Rainier Sessions in the winter. What most people don’t know is that most of my Mt. Rainier sessions happen between July and September, once the snow has melted and before the snow comes in the fall. Most of my winter engagement sessions happen below snow level unless the couple is looking for SNOWY engagement photos.
Where to do engagement photos in the Winter
My personal favorite spots to do in engagement photos in the winter are locations with evergeen trees, mountains in the distance, waterfront, or fields. These tend to be snow free and still offer good nature vibes without looking to dead from winter weather. Hannah and Erik’s couples sessions took place in Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma has plenty of spots for waterfront locations as well as trees that still look beautiful year round. It also tends to be a more mild temperature through the winter months.
What to wear for your Winter Engagement Photos
Picking out outfits for your winter engagement photos will depend on where you choose to do your session. Obviously if we are opting for a snow location, I’d recommend dressing for snow so you aren’t freezing and miserable half way through out time together. If there isn’t snow, dressing for the temperature that day! Thinking about the location you are in, I usually recommend warm neutral tones. Simple is usually better. Foregoing heels and instead opting for boots or sneakers for areas that are outdoorsy.
